Dave Witten enters his second season as first base coach and outfield instructor at UMBC.
While UMBC is his first collegiate coaching position, Witten brings valuable high school and travel ball coaching experience to the Retrievers. He served as the assistant coach at Century High School in Carroll County in 2003 and at Long Reach High School in Howard County in 2004. He also coached ASA travel ball from 1992 until he came to UMBC last season.
Witten will assist with both on- and off-campus recruiting. “Dave brings a wealth of ASA and high school experience to UMBC,” French said. “He knows the area well and has numerous local contacts, which has been a great asset in recruiting in the Mid-Atlantic region.”
Witten will also be in charge of monitoring study hall on the road, and he will assist with fundraising.
Witten served in the Army from 1977-80, and he played and coached baseball for two years during his military service. He was primarily an outfielder and catcher.
Witten resides in Sykesville, Md., with his wife, Gail, and their daughters, Amber (22) and Kristy (17).
