On Shirk: The most versatile player on the team, as she can play anywhere in the field except pitcher…excellent defensively at every position…ignites the rest of the lineup as the leadoff hitter…can bunt, slap and hit to all fields and will occasionally hit with power…has one of the best arms on the team and is the best baserunner…has outstanding knowledge of the game…expected to again be one of the best players in the America East and the Mid-Atlantic region.

 

2005: Started all 58 games as a freshman and led the team with a .333 batting average, recording a team-high 66 hits in 198 at-bats to earn team MVP and America East all-conference second-team and all-rookie team honors… Became just the second Retriever freshman to amass 60 or more hits in her rookie season… Her 66 hits also rank her eighth all-time on UMBC’s single-season hits list and her 198 at-bats ties for eighth-most in a season with teammate Dana Shepherd… Scored a team-best 36 runs… Recorded seven doubles, two triples and a home run and posted 13 RBI… Ranked fourth on the team with 80 total bases… Walked 13 times and ranked second on the squad with a .389 on-base percentage… Was a perfect 17-for-17 in stolen base attempts to lead the Retrievers… Her 17 steals ties the sixth-best single-season total in UMBC history… Totaled 19 multi-hit games… Hit in a team-best 18 consecutive games during the season, the third-best hitting streak in UMBC history… Led the America East with 66 hits (1.14 hits/game) and ranked among the conference leaders in many offensive categories, including fourth in runs scored and stolen bases, seventh in total bases and eighth in batting average… Was named America East Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 17 after hitting .444 with five runs scored and three stolen bases… Also was named to the UMBC Dawg Pound Easter Invitational all-tournament team after going 3-for-7 with a run scored, and to the Third Annual UMBC Softball Spring Classic all-tournament team after going 5-for-15 on the weekend.

 

Background: Was voted her team's Most Valuable Player and received first-team Suburban One League honors as a catcher during her senior year… Was a second-team All-League selection as a junior… Also lettered in basketball at North Penn and was a member of the National Honor Society… Daughter of Brad and Liz Shirk… Has two older siblings, Blaine and Michelle… Born Nov. 4, 1985… A biological sciences major who hopes to become a physical therapist.
