BALTIMORE—UMBC head softball coach Joe French today announced the Retrievers’ 2010 schedule, which includes four tournaments and games against a number of regional rivals. The season begins Feb. 19-21 at the USC Upstate Campus Suites Spartan Classic in Spartanburg, S.C.

Gray, O’Rourke Continue Softball Careers in Sweden
Former UMBC softball players Ashley Gray and Carla O’Rourke spent their summer playing for the Karlslund Eagles in Örebro, Sweden. Gray and O’Rourke join a growing number of Retrievers to play professionally overseas after using up their collegiate eligibility, including Megan Oursler in 2005, Amy Sadowl in 2006 and Lauren Nicholson in 2007.
FORMER UMBC PITCHER AMY SADOWL PLAYING PROFESSIONALLY IN THE NETHERLANDS
Amy Sadowl’s senior season at UMBC was cut short. The pitcher from Horsham, Pa., made just eight appearances in 2006 before shoulder tendonitis shut her down for the next month, and she took the mound only six more times all year. So when she was presented the opportunity to play professionally in the Netherlands, extending her softball career for another four months, she jumped at it.

GRADUATING SENIOR MEGAN OURSLER OFF TO SWEDEN FOR SUMMER SOFTBALL LEAGUE
After years of schooling and education, the date of graduation from college sends individuals in different directions. For some graduates it is heading off on exotic trips and vacations while others jump right into the work force, putting their education to use. For graduating senior Megan Oursler it is continuing to do what she loves in playing softball and combining it with a chance to see a new part of the world as she is set to head to Sweden to play softball during the summer of 2005.
11/20/2009 Men's Basketball Takes to Road to Face George Washington in Saturday Matinee UMBC plays its first road contest of the year and George Washington opens its home schedule as the Retrievers (0-2) and Colonials (2-0) play a Saturday matinee (2:00 p.m.) at the Smith Center. This will be the fourth consecutive year that these two teams have met. The Colonials won, 70-64, on Thanksgiving Eve last season and tied the all-time series at three apiece. Paul Mittermeier has the call of the game, beginning with the pregame show at 1:55 p.m. on Fox 1370 Sports Radio (www.fox1370.com).

11/18/2009 Gilliam Sparks Men's Basketball With 22 Points, But Retrievers Nipped, 69-66, by Loyola Junior guard Jamal Barney scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half as visiting Loyola (2-1) held off UMBC (0-2), 69-66, in the 43rd meeting between the two Baltimore-area schools. UMBC sophomore wing Chauncey Gilliam scored a career-high 22 points to lead the Retrievers. UMCB rallied from a 10-point first half deficit to lead on three occaions in the final three minutes, but could not pull out the victory.
Read More 11/17/2009 Men's Basketball Hopes to Rebound as Loyola Visits RAC Arena on Wednesday UMBC and Loyola played for 20 consecutive seasons a year after the Retrievers joined the NCAA Division I ranks. That streak came to an end after the 2006-07 meeting, but the two schools renew the rivalry in the Retrievers’ second game of the campaign. The Retrievers and Greyhounds tip-off at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night at the RAC Arena. The game will be televised live by MASN, and Fox 1370 AM (www.fox1370.com) and www.umbcretrievers.tv also will broadcast the action.
