Three Retrievers Record Two Hits, Softball Drops Game Against La Salle

Baltimore, Md. – The trio at the top of the order, Sophomore Maddie Daigneau (New River, Ariz./Boulder Creek), redshirt senior Erin Trnka (Goffstown, N.H./Goffstown), and freshman Imani Dawson (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), each tallied two base hits in UMBC's 5-4 loss to La Salle on Saturday in day two of the Hampton Inn BWI UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational.

UMBC (2-16) began the game with a pair runs in the bottom half of the game's opening frame, the first of which was set up by one of Daigneau's hits to lead off the inning.  She would be brought in to score after Trnka singled and a throwing error by La Salle on the same play.  Trnka scored the second run of the inning after sophomore Valerie Hammett (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) singled up the middle.

La Salle (6-12) would respond immediately with one run in the second inning and three runs in the third inning, which included a two-run homerun to center field.  Senior Toni Santonastasso (Canonsburg, Pa./Pope John XXIII Regional) responded by driving in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.  La Salle however, would score another run in the fifth inning to restore their two-run lead.

In the sixth inning, Daigneau drove in freshman Sierra Pierce (Youngstown, Ohio/Jacson-Milton), with two out to bring the score to 5-4.  Trnka then led off the seventh by splitting the gap in left-center.  Dawson then bunted Trnka over to third, but UMBC was unable to bring her in to even the score, ending the game with a pop out and a ground out.

Senior Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) worked the entire game in the circle, allowing five runs (three earned), nine hits, and struck out one in her complete game.

The Retrievers will take the field for one more game this weekend, when they take on Drexel at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday.
