Softball Resumes America East Action at Binghamton; Schedule Update
BALTIMORE – UMBC softball returns to America East action over the weekend, as it travels to Binghamton for a three-game series against the Bearcats. The schedule for the weekend has been updated with the Retrievers opening the series with a single game at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 5 at the Bearcats Softball Complex and closing the series with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 6 at noon. All the action will be live free of charge on the America East digital network.
The Retrievers (22-11, 0-2 AEC) are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Howard on Wednesday. UMBC's offensive exploded for 20 runs and a .308 batting average in the series. The Retrievers' offensive efforts were highlighted by a pair of grand slams in game two from senior Caitlin Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) and sophomore Jordan Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South River). Sganga finished the day with a team-best seven runs batted in.
Junior Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) registered doubles on three of her four hits against the Bison to enter UMBC's top-10 in career doubles (33) and extra-base hits (55). The catcher leads the team with a .414 batting average and a .727 slugging percentage. Hall and Chance are among the top-30 hardest players to strikeout, entering the week, with a combined seven strikeouts.
In the circle, pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) leads the squad with a 1.79 ERA and a 13-4 overall record. Holte posted her second shutout of the season in her 19th appearance. Pitcher Nicole Casagrand (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) has added a 4-2 record with a 3.02 ERA, while Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) is holding opponents to a team-low .249 batting average in 55.0 innings of work.
Binghamton (9-10, 0-0 AEC) has won three of its last five games including a doubleheader sweep of St. Bonaventure on Tuesday. Junior Caytlin Friis homered twice and drove in three runs in the victory. The Bearcats have two players batting over .300 on the season in Lisa Cadogan (.326) and Taylor Chaffee (.325). Cadogan has 17 walks on the season and a .508 on-base percentage. The sophomore has driven in a team-best 12 runs. Chaffee has seven extra-base hits for a team-best .600 slugging percentage.
In the circle, Demi Laney has posted an 8-4 record with a 2.96 ERA. She is holding opponents to a .277 batting average and has struck out 51 batters.
