BALTIMORE – After much delay, UMBC softball and George Washington will look to get their single game in at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 at GW Softball Field. The contest was originally schedule for March 4 and has since been pushed back to Tuesday, March 25 and now Thursday, March 27 due to inclement weather.
Heading into its final game before America East action begins, the Retrievers sit at 19-9 on the season under head coach Joe French. UMBC posted a 2-3 record at the 11th Annual UMBC Spring Classic over the weekend, splitting a series with both Sacred Heart and Saint Peter's, before falling to Mount St. Mary's in the tournament finale. Senior Megan Sauble (Glen Burnie, Md./CCBC-Catonsville) hit the ball hard all weekend, going 4-for-9 from the dish for a team-best .444 average and four runs batted in.
The team has been hitting the ball exceptionally well, batting .291 for the season with a .428 slugging percentage. Junior catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) is batting .400 and slugging .694, good enough for first in the America East conference. The junior is the 37th toughest batter to strike out in Division I and is tied with Amy Wolff (1994-97) and Julia Culotta (2008-11) for seventh on UMBC's all-time home runs list (21). Senior first baseman Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) has played error-free softball this season, and has impressed at the plate, driving in 23 runs this season.
UMBC's rookie pitchers have continued their excellence in the circle. Two-time America East Pitcher of the Week Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) leads the conference with a 1.63 ERA. Holte enters the week ranked first in Division I in walks allowed per seven innings (0.37) and ranks 50th with 11 victories. Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./Colonie Central) is holding opponents to a .250 batting average, good enough for fifth in the league. Nicole Casagrand (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) has allowed a team low 20 earned runs through 47.0 innings pitched.
Since grabbing all five games at the Capital Invitational, George Washington (11-18-1) has dropped three of its four games. The Colonials are led by freshman Megan Linn who was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for games played March 10-16. She leads the team in batting average (.340) and runs batted in (21). Junior shortstop Victoria Valos was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week last week. She leads the team with 12 doubles and three home runs, and is the school's all-time leader in runs batted in.
