Softball’s Offense Falls Short Versus Towson, 8-0

TOWSON, Md. – UMBC softball's senior right fielder Caitlin Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) went two-for-two from the plate in Wednesday afternoon's game against Towson, but the Retrievers were unable to get their offense going, falling to the Tigers, 8-0, in six innings at Tiger Softball Complex.

The Retrievers (14-5) fall for just the second time in the last nine games, while Towson (11-7) wins its third straight.

UMBC's offense tallied 15 hits yesterday, but were unable to keep that up on Wednesday, as Chance recorded two of the Retrievers' three hits on the day.

UMBC starting pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) started off the contest with a strikeout, but sophomore Olivia Yarbrough reached first on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt moved her into scoring position and a double to right center from senior Maureen Hepner scored Yarbrough and gave Towson a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Tigers were able to add four runs in the fourth, all coming with two outs. Holte surrendered back-to-back singles to start the inning, before she was able to register a pair of outs. Towson's bottom of the order produced two more singles to drive in a pair of runs and a triple from Yarbrough drove in another two to extend the advantage to 5-0 and cue the exit of Holte. Holte (9-1) ended the contest allowing five earned runs on seven hits.

Towson added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth and a double and single in the sixth ended the contest.

Retrievers' freshman pitcher Nicole Casagrand (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) came in for two innings, allowing one earned run on five hits. Sophomore Ambar Hickman picked up the victory, throwing the six inning shutout.

UMBC freshman Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) recorded the Retrievers third hit, reaching base safely for the second time in the contest after walking in the second.

UMBC returns home over the weekend when it hosts the 10th annual Dawg Pound Invitational at the UMBC Softball Stadium.
