CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC softball freshman outfielder Jaclyn Buckley (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Camden Regional) earned America East Rookie of the Week recognition after her first weekend of action, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Buckley helped the Retrievers to a 2-2 season-opening weekend at the Seahawk Invitational. The rookie hit .545 with a .909 slugging percentage in the tournament.
Buckley registered her first collegiate hit in the Retrievers' opener, belting a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to lift UMBC to the come-from-behind victory over host UNC-Wilmington, 5-3. The outfielder followed with a perfect three-for-three performance from the dish in Sunday's first game versus Norfolk State, a 5-3 Retriever win.
The Retrievers rescheduled their game at George Mason, originally scheduled for today, which will now take place on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 2:30 p.m. in Fairfax, Va. UMBC will now play a doubleheader against Coppin State on April 30, starting at 2 p.m.
UMBC will return to action on Friday, Feb. 21 when it travels to the Elon Tournament. The Retrievers open up the weekend with a Friday doubleheader versus Niagara (11 a.m.) and Iona (1:15 p.m.).
