BALTIMORE – UMBC softball is set for its final America East series of the season, when it welcomes Hartford to the UMBC Softball Stadium for a three-game series over the weekend. The series opens with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 27, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. The Retrievers will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday afternoon, with a noon start.
UMBC (9-37, 1-14 AEC) split with La Salle on Tuesday, picking up a 13-10 victory, before falling 3-2 in six innings in game two. Junior first baseman Chelsea Bertoglio (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback College) drilled her first grand slam in a Retrievers’ uniform in the win, while freshman designated player Danielle O’Neill (Loathian, Md./Southern) recorded four hits and three RBI in the doubleheader.
Sophomore catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) leads UMBC in batting average (.397) and on-base percentage (.459) on the season. Her 35 RBI rank second in the America East. O’Neill leads the team in doubles (eight) and is the only other member of the Retrievers hitting over .300 on the year.
In the circle, sophomore Miranda Clark (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) earned her second win of the season over the weekend, coming in relief to throw 3.2 scoreless innings of work and striking out five batters. Senior Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) leads the squad in strikeouts (53) and innings pitched (132.2) on the year.
Hartford (16-29, 6-7 AEC) has dropped its last four games, including Wednesday’s 10-2 loss to Boston College. Senior Melani Maxwell recorded her second long ball of the season in the loss.
Graduate Erica Phelps leads the Hawks offense with a .270 batting average on the year. Senior Kate Wacyk has a team-best 11 extra-base hits and 23 RBI.
In the circle, Zuzana Kudernatschov is fourth in the league in ERA (2.67) and strikeouts (117). The junior has three complete game shutouts and has made 24 appearances.
