Margentino Earns Weekly Honor; UMBC Softball Drops a Pair in Final Day of UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational
UMBC softball sophomore Kayla Margentino (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) earned America East Player of the Week honors for her performance on Sunday at the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational, but the Retrievers dropped a pair of contests in Monday’s action, falling in extra innings to Marist, 7-6, and concluding the tournament with an 8-1 loss to Rhode Island.

Margentino’s RBI Single Leads the Retrievers to a Split on Sunday at UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational
UMBC sophomore first baseman Kayla Margentino (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) batted .571 on the afternoon (4-for-7) and hit a walk-off single to score freshman Bridget O'Malley (Brooklyn, Md./Seton Kenough) from third and lead the Retrievers to a 3-2 victory against Howard in the final game on Sunday at the UMBC Softball Stadium for the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational. The black and gold fell, 12-2, to Princeton earlier in the afternoon. O’Malley had three hits and scored two runs on the day for the Retrievers.

Brown and Hall Tab America East Weekly Honors
Senior pitcher Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) and sophomore catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) each earned conference honors on a 3-3 weekend for UMBC softball. Hall was named America East Player of the Week, while Brown garnered pitcher of the week recognition.

Brown Tosses Second-Straight Shutout Versus St. Peter’s; UMBC Falls to Coppin State
Senior pitcher Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) threw her second-straight shutout for UMBC softball en route to an 11-0 five inning victory against Saint Peter’s on Sunday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The Retrievers were on the other end of an 11-0 six inning loss in the final game of the UMBC Retriever Classic against Coppin State, with the black and gold being held to three hits in the contest, as the Retrievers finished 3-3 on the weekend.

UMBC Softball Cruises Past Morgan; Falls Against Saint Francis
UMBC softball sophomore catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) batted a team-best .667 and tabbed a double and home run on day two of the UMBC Retriever Classic. The Retrievers defeated Morgan State, 7-0, on Saturday at the UMBC Softball Stadium, but were unable to overcome a controversial call that led to a seven-run sixth inning for Saint Francis, who went on to capture an 8-1 win.

Softball Splits on Day One of UMBC Retriever Classic
UMBC softball had four players bat over .500 on the day, led by senior outfielder Ashley Scroggin (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) who went 6-for-7 from the dish and drove in three runs in day one of the UMBC Retriever Classic. The black and gold split on Friday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium, defeating Morgan State, 18-2, in five innings and falling to Coppin State, 13-8, in game two of the day.

UMBC Softball Hosts First of Three Tournaments in March
UMBC softball co-hosts its first of three tournaments in the month of March, when the Retrievers welcome Morgan State, Coppin State, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Saint Peter’s to the UMBC Softball Stadium for the UMBC Retrievers Classic. The tournament begins Friday, March 1 and runs until Sunday, March 3. Coppin State will also host two of the tournament games on Saturday.

Due to Tuesday’s inclement weather, it has been determined that the field conditions will be unplayable for Wednesday’s UMBC softball game against Towson. The game has been postponed, with a makeup date yet to be determined.

UMBC softball’s freshman center fielder Bridget O’Malley (Brookly, Md./Seton Keough) batted a team-best .571 at the Seahawk Clash and helped the Retrievers to their first victory of the season on Sunday, Feb. 24 against Morehead State en route to earning America East Rookie of the Week honors.

Softball's Offense Awakens in Seahawk Clash Rematches
After tallying four hits in day one of the Seahawk Clash, UMBC softball exploded for 22 hits in day two, including 12 hits in a 7-4 victory against Morehead State in game one. The Retrievers were unable to sweep the day, falling 14-4 in five innings to host UNC-Wilmington at Boseman Field. Freshman Bridget O'Malley (Brookly, Md./Seton Keough) had a perfect 3-for-3 day and added three runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases, while sophomore Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) batted .500 (3-6) and drove in a team-best four runners.

UMBC softball combined for four hits in its two games on day one of the 2013 Seahawk Clash. The Retrievers dropped its first contest of the day, 7-1, to Morehead State and followed with a 3-1 loss to host UNC-Wilmington in game two.

BALTIMORE – UMBC softball head coach Joe French announced the postponement of Tuesday, Feb. 19 game against Mount St. Mary’s due to weather and field conditions. The game is rescheduled for Tuesday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at the UMBC Softball Stadium.

Softball Drops Two on Day Three of Jimmy John’s Lion Classic II
UMBC softball shortstop Caitlin Chance batted .571 on day three of the Jimmy John’s Lion Classic II, but South Dakota and South Dakota State’s hitting proved to be too much for the Retrievers pitching, as UMBC fell twice on Saturday afternoon at North Oak Park. The Coyotes earned the 9-4 victory in game one, while the Jackrabbits picked up the 13-2 win in five innings.

UMBC softball freshman Danielle O’Neill (Loathian, Md./Southern) went 3-for-4 and added three walks on day two of the Jimmy John’s Lion Classic II, while sophomore Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) combined for five RBI in a pair of Retriever losses at the North Oak Park. LSU-Alexandria slipped past UMBC in a 7-6 extra inning victory in game two, while Texas Southern picked up a 14-5 victory in five innings in game one.

UMBC softball junior first baseman Chelsea Bertoglio went 2-for-3 in her first outing with the Retrievers, while sophomore catcher Taylor Hall drove in three of UMBC’s five runs on the evening, but it was not enough as Southeastern Louisiana picked up a 13-5 victory in six innings in the Retrievers 2013 season-opener at North Oak Park in day one of the Jimmy John’s Lion Classic II.
