CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC softball sophomore Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) was named the America East Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
This is Warner's second conference accolade of her career after she was named the Rookie of the Week last year on April 11.
The sophomore's most recent honor comes after she led the Retrievers with three homeruns, a double, five runs scored and five RBI in five games last week. In UMBC's game against local rival Towson last Thursday, Warner slammed two homeruns and knocked in four runs en route to leading the Retrievers to a shutout win, 6-0.
On Sunday, Warner hit her team-leading fourth homerun in the Retrievers' final game of the Dawg Pound Invitational against Seton Hall.
This season, Warner leads UMBC with a .380 batting average (19-for-50), with ten extra base hits. The third baseman also has a team-leading nine hits and has scored 11 runs.
Warner's award is the second conference accolade of the year for the Retrievers after freshman Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) was named the Rookie of the Week back on Feb. 27.
UMBC returns to action this weekend for the UMBC Spring Classic. The Retrievers take on Siena and St. Francis on Thursday, before facing Sacred Heart, Rhode Island and Brown over the next three days.
