Softball Falls to Boston U., 6-4, in Game One; Game Two Postponed Due to Rain Forcing Sunday Doubleheader
BALTIMORE – Freshman catcher Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) went 2-for-4 and hit her seventh homerun of the year on Saturday, but it was not enough as Boston University (3-14, 13-3 AE) defeated UMBC (19-29, 1-15 AE), 6-4, in the series opener at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The Terriers and Retrievers were scheduled to play a doubleheader, however, due to rain in the area, the second game was moved to Sunday morning at 11 a.m.
Hall hit her homerun to center field to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, giving UMBC the lead 2-1, but BU answered two innings later with four runs in the sixth to take the lead back, this time for good.
Terriers' starter Whitney Tuthill gave three runs on six hits, but lasted five innings to record her 13th win of the season. Holli Floetker entered in the sixth and surrendered a single run in the inning before sending the Retrievers down in order in the seventh to earn the save.
Junior Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) took the loss after yielding four earned runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work.
The visitors opened the game swinging and scored one run on two hits in the top of the first, but wasted an opportunity to break the game open, stranding two runners on base.
The lead held up until the bottom of the third when senior Ashley Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) started the UMBC rally with a single to left. After a sacrifice bunt, sophomore Jessica Warner(Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) tied the game, bringing Carver around with a single up the middle.
Brown fed off the support, putting three straight Terriers down in the fourth, allowing her catcher, Hall, to give the Retrievers the lead with a solo shot to lead off the bottom half of the inning.
Both teams got runners on base in the fifth, but neither could capitalize, going scoreless in the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Boston U. got to Brown, plating four runs in the inning to retake the lead, 5-2.
UMBC responded immediately, as senior Katrina Gaar (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar/Orange Coast CC) led off with a single up the middle and then Hall followed with a single to the left side, moving Gaar to second. Senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) made the rally count with a single down the left field line, bringing in Gaar from second and cutting the lead to two, 5-3. Classmate Angela Yannone(Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) drew a walk to load the bases and after a double play, sophomore Caitlin Chance(Easton, Md./Easton) finished the rally with a single to right, plating Ferguson from third, cutting the lead to just one run, 5-4.
The Terries pushed back with a solo run in the top of the seven, pushing the lead back to two, to cap the scoring and stunt the Retriever rally.
Sunday's doubleheader between UMBC and Boston University kicks off at 11 a.m. following a ceremony to celebrate six Retriever seniors who will be playing in their final regular season home games.
