Baltimore, Md – After a week off from America East competition in which they took five of seven non-conference games, the UMBC softball team (17-16, 1-2 America East) returns to conference action with three Easter weekend games at Binghamton.
Senior Katie Ferguson (Northeast, Md/ Northeast/ Cecil CC) will get the ball in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Bearcats at 1 p.m. The two teams will finish off the twin bill with a 3 p.m. game on Friday before playing the final game of the series at noon on Saturday.
Scouting the Retrievers:
The Retrievers are coming off an 8-0 loss at the hands of Georgetown this past Tuesday. The game was the final game of a seven day, seven game non-conference slate. The Retrievers defeated George Washington, 7-4, a week earlier and routed Howard, 12-5, just two days later. UMBC then took three of four from St.Peter's over the weekend. Freshman Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./ Cosby) took home America East Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season after batting .500 (9-for-18) in the first six games of the non-conference action. Over the entire week, Hall had four doubles, five RBIs and a hit in all seven games.
Scouting the Bearcats:
Binghamton (12-16, 3-3 America East) recovered from an 0-3 conference start with a three game sweep of Hartford last weekend before getting swept by defending A-10 champs Fordham in a double header on Tuesday. The Bearcats are led by senior third baseman Chelsea Horne, who is batting .550 (11-for-20) with a 1.143 slugging percentage and a .722 on base percentage in the five America East contests in which she has had an at-bat.
Jessica Phillips is also having a strong season at the plate for Binghamton. The junior outfielder leads the team with a .352 batting average, .762 slugging percentage and has a team-best six homeruns and 51 total bases.
The Bearcats have pitching depth as Demi Laney, Kate Price and Kristen Emerling have each made 14 appearances while Rhoda Marsteller has a team high 11 starts.
