Softball Announces Captains; September Clinic Canceled

BALTIMORE—UMBC head coach Joe French today announced that seniors Ashley Carver (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West), Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) and Angela Yannone (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) will serve as team captains for the 2012 season.

Ferguson, a first baseman, earned America East All-Conference and Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region first team honors after batting .340 with 16 extra-base hits in her first season with the Retrievers. Yannone, a catcher, is coming off a career year in which she batted .289 with 14 extra-base hits and 29 RBIs, while Carver, a utility player, has been a steadying presence in the field, committing just four errors in 75 chances last season.

"Each of these players have proven to be quality student-athletes, and I have confidence that they will lead this team on and off the field as we strive for an America East title," French said.

September Clinic Canceled: French also announced today that the first of two fall clinics, which was originally scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 18, has been canceled. Players who have already signed up are encouraged to attend either the remaining fall clinic on Sunday, Oct. 16, or the winter clinic on Saturday, Feb. 11. For more information, contact Coach French at 410-455-1325 or jfrench@umbc.edu, or assistant coach Jill Dorsch at 410-455-5556 or jilliand@umbc.edu.
