WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The UMBC softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to America East rival Hartford, Friday afternoon at the Hartford Softball Complex.
Hartford claimed game one, a pitcher dual, 3-1 before taking the second game as well, 7-4.
Sophomore third baseman Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 4-for-8 on the day, hitting a double and scoring two runs to lead UMBC.
In game one, the hosts scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie, and then held off a UMBC rally to claim the first game and earn their first conference win of the year. The Retrievers had second and third with no outs in the top of the sixth after senior Angela Yannone(Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) singled and sophomore Caitlin Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) doubled, but could not score a run.
Junior Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) took the loss for UMBC after yielding three runs on six hits and striking out three batters.
Siera Sheehan picked up the win for Hartford pitching a complete game while only giving up one run on five hits.
In game two, the Hawks plated five runs in the bottom of the third and tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to sweep the doubleheader.
Brown and Sheehan once again earned the decisions for their respective teams.
The Retrievers rallied in the top of the fifth, getting three runs, two of them coming on an RBI double by senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) to close the gap to two, 5-3.
UMBC and Hartford conclude their three-game series with a single game tomorrow scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
