STARKVILLE, MISS – UMBC softball sophomore Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) and senior Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) have been named to the NFCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region Teams, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Thursday afternoon. Warner was named to the First Team as a third baseman while Ferguson earned a spot on the Second Team as a pitcher/utility player.
For Warner this is her second post season honor after being selected to the America East All-Conference First Team last week. After earning All-Rookie Team accolades as a freshman in 2011, the sophomore led UMBC in nearly every hitting category this season. She finished second in the conference in hits (60) and total bases (108) while placing third in homeruns (11) and fourth in batting average (.390). In addition she recorded a .961 fielding percentage, leading the Retrievers with 113 assists.
This is Ferguson's second straight year on the All-Region Team after earning First Team honors last year as a junior. Adding more pitching to her repertoire this season, Ferguson led the Retrievers with eight wins during the 2012 season to go along with a team-best 3.24 ERA and 87 strikeouts. As a hitter she clubbed four homeruns and finished fourth on the squad in hits (37) and runs scored (15).
With Warner and Ferguson both earning All-Region recognition, this is the first time that UMBC has had multiple selections on the All-Region Teams since Lauren Hebb, Lauren Nicholson and Kristie Pickeral were all selected to the squad back in 2003.
Last season, Ferguson became the first Retriever to earn NFCA All-Region honors since Melanie Denischuk in 2006 while Warner is only the eighth different player in UMBC history to make the list.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to one of three 2012 NFCA Division I All-American teams which will be named on Wed., May 30.
