Culotta, Warner Selected to America East All-Championship Team
BOSTON—UMBC senior left fielder Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee) and freshman third baseman Jessica Warner(Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) were selected to the America East All-Championship Team, the conference announced Saturday.
Culotta reached base twice and stole two bases against Binghamton. She beat out an infield single in the first, which put runners on the corners. She then broke for second, drawing a throw from Bearcats' catcher Deannie Plemon, which allowed Warner to score easily from third on the double steal. Culotta also walked and stole second in the fifth, and she made a spectacular throw in the sixth that nearly nailed Binghamton center fielder Meghan Tucker at the plate on a sacrifice fly.
Warner also reached base twice against the Bearcats. She walked in the first inning and came around to score the Retrievers' first run on the double steal, and she singled in the third. In addition, she successfully executed a sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning, and she played a flawless third base, recording a team-high six assists.
Albany pitcher Brittany MacFawn was named the America East Championship's Most Outstanding Player after earning two wins and a save en route to the Great Danes' first conference title since 2007.
UMBC's season ended with a 3-2 loss to Binghamton on Friday. The Retrievers (25-25, 8-10 AE) advanced to the America East Championship for the fifth time in six years, earning the fourth seed.
