Softball Set to Host UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational This Weekend

 

BALTIMORE—The UMBC softball team (4-6) will co-host the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational this weekend at UMBC Softball Stadium, along withCoppin State University. Brown (1-2-1), Canisius (3-2), Drexel (3-7),Morgan State (5-9), Niagara (1-2) and Seton Hall (5-11) will also compete. Due to heavy rain in the Baltimore area, Friday's games at UMBC have been postponed. An updated schedule follows:

Dawg Bites: UMBC is 4-6 on the season following a 13-4 six-inning rout of Delaware on Wednesday… Freshman shortstop Jessica Warner (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) smashed the first two home runs of her career, including a walk-off grand slam… She finished with six RBI in the game… Junior left fielder Katie Ferguson (North East, Md./North East/Cecil CC) and senior second baseman Lauren Brummell(Hanover, Va./Hanover) also hit round-trippers… Ferguson went 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored against the Blue Hens… Senior hurler Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge, Md./Archbishop Spalding) earned her fourth win of the season and struck out a season-high seven batters… Brummell is batting a team-best .400 (14-for-35) on the season… Five Retrievers are batting better than .300… Weigman is five wins shy of becoming the Retrievers' all-time wins leader; she currently has 52 career wins.

 

On the Brown Bears: Brown is 1-2-1 on the season following the season-opening Hampton Lady Pirates Classic. Kristi Munoz is batting a team-best .500 so far this season, while Kristie Chin leads the Bears on the mound with a 3.68 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 19.0 innings of work.

 

UMBC vs. Brown All-Time: The Retrievers are 7-1 all-time against the Bears with four straight wins. Last season, UMBC defeated Brown twice at the UMBC Retriever Classic. Center fielder Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee) went 4-for-6 with two RBI to lead the Retrievers at the plate.

 

On the Golden Griffins: Canisius is 3-2 on the season following the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C.Katie Medina is batting a team-best .400 so far this season, while Amanda Baun has posted a team-best 2.56 ERA.

 

UMBC vs. Canisius All-Time: The Retrievers are 1-3 all-time against the Golden Griffins. The teams have not met since 2008 at the GW Colonial Classic, a 5-2 victory for Canisius.

 

On the Dragons: Drexel is 3-7 on the season following a 1-1 weekend at the George Tech Tournament.Paige Collings is batting a team-best .419 so far this season and also leads the Dragons with eight RBI and four doubles among her 13 hits. Hillary Allen has posted a 2-2 record and a team-best 2.73 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 33.1 innings of work.

 

UMBC vs. Drexel All-Time: The Retrievers are 16-7 all-time against the Dragons, but Drexel has taken two of the last three meetings following a 15-game winning streak for the Retrievers that dated to 1994. The teams last met at the 2009 Dawg Pound Tournament, a 7-6 victory for the Dragons. The Retrievers collected 12 hits in the game, led by Brummell, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

 

On the Morgan State Bears: Morgan State is 5-9 on the season following a 1-3 effort at the Norfolk State Tournament two weeks ago.

 

UMBC vs. Morgan State All-Time: The Retrievers are 21-1 all-time against the Bears with seven straight wins. The teams last met at the 2010 UMBC Retriever Classic, a 10-2 six-inning victory for UMBC. Brummell and left fielder Lynn Pronobis (Waldorf, Md./McDonough) each had two hits in the game, while Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) allowed just one unearned run on three hits and struck out seven in four innings of work.

 

On the Purple Eagles: Niagara is 1-2 on the season following the season-opening Georgia Tech Tournament. Jen Hare is batting a team-best .500 so far this season, while Julie DiMatteo has posted a 5.88 ERA with six strikeouts in 8.1 innings of work.

 

On the Pirates: Seton Hall is 5-11 on the season and has lost five straight following a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Towson on Wednesday. Brittany Hammer is batting a team-best .375 so far this season, while Jen Metzger has posted three wins and a 1.25 ERA in 28.0 innings of work. The Pirates won the 2009 Dawg Pound Invitational with a 3-1 showing.
