  • Athletics Construction Update: Stadium Locker Room Complex

BALTIMORE—UMBC Athletics recently announced that construction has begun on a five-million dollar renovation and addition to its stadium locker room complex.

For the first time, all of UMBC’s teams which compete and train at the stadium complex will have their own locker rooms. The new, expanded men’s and women’s lacrosse team rooms will be at the far west and far east ends of the facility, with other locker rooms for men’s soccer, women’s soccer, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s cross country and track & field. There will also be a new sports medicine complex, a large team meeting room, two coaches’ locker rooms, an officials’ locker room and an equipment issue/laundry room.

An outdoor plaza will be built at the west entrance of the facility.

Gutting of the existing building started a few weeks ago and updated photos of the construction process are now available.  When complete, the new complex will have all new finishes, mechanical and electrical equipment, roof, additional insulation and exterior siding. It will include full-size lockers, new flooring, a security system and energy efficient lighting. The area of renovation is approximately 8,700 square feet, while the additions total nearly 3,200 square feet.

The design team includes CSD Architects, Faisant Associates, Mullins Engineering and Rummel, Kieper & Kahl. The construction will be managed by J. Vinton Schafer & Sons, Inc. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2008.

The project is the third major enhancement to the stadium complex since 2005. In the spring of ’05, a new Momentum 51(field) turf was installed at UMBC Stadium, while a new Bermuda grass surface debuted at UMBC Soccer Stadium in the fall of 2006.
