UMBC Athletics Mourns the Passing of Two Alumnae

UMBC Athletics mourns the passing of two recent alumnae, Johanna “Micki” Blakely and Mary Rollins.

 

“We mourn the loss of two outstanding people who were excellent members of our athletic program and had very bright futures,” Dr. Charles Brown, Director of Athletics said.

 

Ms. Rollins died from a fall in the Inner Harbor area of Baltimore city in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 19. She was a four-year veteran of the Howard County fire department, where she was a firefighter and paramedic. Mary earned her degree in Emergency Health Services in 2002. She earned four letters in cross country and track and field from 1997-2001. The Darlington, Md. native  was the Baltimore Metropolitan Cross Country champion in both 1997 and 1998 and had set indoor and outdoor records in the 1,500 meters.

 

Shortly after returning from England, Ms. Blakely died on Saturday, July 7, at the University of Maryland Hospital from complications linked to sepsis. Micki been working on an internship in London related to her graduate studies in history at the University of South Carolina. The Columbia, Md. native had earned her degree in history in 2001 and competed for the swimming and diving teams from 1998-2000. Micki earned three medals in the 1999 Northeast Conference Swimming & Diving Championships. Her brother Steve earned three letters in soccer for the Retrievers from 2001-2003.

 

The funeral and interment for Mary Rollins will be held Tuesday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at the New Bridge Baptist Church, 37 Wyatt Lane, Colora (Rising Sun), Maryland.
