FIVE UMBC STUDENT-ATHLETES TO BE FEATURED ON FOX SPORTS NET “NCAA ON CAMPUS” SHOW

5/5/2006

UMBC student-athletes Kristin Drabyn, Amanda Robinson, Toni Boyd, Stacy Hunt and Morgan Hatten will be featured on "NCAA On Campus" show.

Baltimore, Md. – Four members from the UMBC women’s basketball team and a member from the women’s track and field team will be featured on Fox Sports Net’s “NCAA On Campus” after the five spent spring break working for Habitat For Humanity in the St. Benard Parish in New Orleans, La.  NCAA On Campus is a monthly, 30-minute look at college sports that features NCAA student-athletes and competitions.

Women’s basketball players Kristin Drabyn, Morgan Hatten, Stacy Hunt and Amanda Robinson, along with track and field athlete Quiteelia Boyd drove 17 hours to New Orleans, slept in tents provided by Habitat for Humanity and worked from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a full week, gutting out houses and helping with the humanitarian effort.

According to the Habitat for Humanity website, the St. Bernard Parish remains one of the most devastated communities in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. St. Bernard, located to the southeast of New Orleans, suffered significant structural damage to 100% of its residential and commercial units.  As of April 12, a total of 1,082 homes have been cleaned towards a goal of 5,000 homes by June, 30.

The volunteers, according to Habitat for Humanity, salvage family memorabilia and remove harmful debris.  As the project unfolds, FEMA will demolish those homes that cannot be salvaged, and NOAHH will partner with the many uninsured or underinsured families to build a new Habitat home on their cleared lots.
