Men’s Cross Country Looks to Defend Their Title at the #AEXC Championships

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC men's cross country team travels north to Orono, Maine to compete in the 2014 America East Cross Country Championships. The Retrievers are heading to the University of Maine to defend their title against the nine team field.

UMBC UPDATE:

The Retrievers come into the championships after competing in the Princeton Invitational on October 18. Junior Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) led the Retrievers with a fourth place finish. Omar crossed the tape in a time of 24:06. Austin Hayslett (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) and Eric Schuler (Columbia, Md./Reservoir) finished 28th and 29th respectively with times of 24:47 and 24:48.

UMBC finished in fifth as a team, as Thomas Awad from Penn finished in first, with a time of 24:00. 

LAST YEAR AT THE AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIPS:

UMBC won the 2013 America East Championships, led by Omar and his third place finish. Omar finished in a time of 25:07.32.

Paced by Omar and Smith, UMBC (58 pts.) edged out meet-host Binghamton (65 pts.) by just seven points after clipping the Bearcats by six points at the America East Pre-Conference Meet to start the season.  Stony Brook (70 pts.) and New Hampshire (72 pts.) made it a crowded top end, taking third and fourth place.  Maine (110 pts.) and Albany (162 pts.) took fifth and sixth with Vermont (200 pts.), UMass Lowell (224 pts.), and Hartford (253 pts.) finishing out the nine-team standings.

With the Retriever win, head coach Matt Gittermann and his staff were named the 2013 America East Coaching Staff of the Year.

HASSAN HONORS:

Junior Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) earned America East Performer of the Week honors twice this year, on September 16 and October 7. Omar has been at the forefront of the men's team this year, finishing as the top runner for UMBC three of the four meets this year. He currently holds the best time this year with a 24:06 at the Princeton Invitational on October 18.

UP NEXT:

UMBC will head to NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals, hosted by Penn State University. The meet will commence from State College, Pa. on November 14.
