UMBC’s Schuler Named America East’s Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete

America East Release

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – UMBC junior Eric Schuler (Columbia, Md./Reservoir) has been named the America East Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete for the Fall 2013 season, the conference office announced on Thursday afternoon.

Schuler becomes the fourth UMBC athlete to earn an America East Scholar-Athlete award in the last three years as women's basketball's Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) earned the honor in 2011-12 while swimming and diving's Andrew Eckhoff (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) garnered the accolade a year ago and men's soccer's Liam Paddock (Worcestershire, England/Chase Technology College) received the award in both 2011-12 and 2012-13.

This past fall, Schuler was a part of a record-setting and America East championship-winning Retriever men's squad.  In the first meet of the season, the America East Pre-Conference Meet at Binghamton, the junior runner took the top overall spot as UMBC put the league on notice by winning the team competition.  Schuler completed the course with a time of 25:33.1, the second-fastest in course history at the time of the race.

Schuler's success continued as he scored for the Black and Gold in each of the next two meets, the Navy Invitational and the Paul Short Invitational at Lehigh.

In November, Schuler was selected to the America East All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year.  He holds a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average (GPA) while majoring in computer science.  During his first three years at UMBC, Schuler has earned a spot on the President's List for his academic work after each of his five semesters.
