NEW ORLEANS – UMBC sophomore Hassan Omar (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) has been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Mid-Atlantic Region Team, the organization announced on Monday evening.
Omar placed 22nd overall at this past weekend's NCAA Mid-Atlantic regional at Lehigh, finishing the 10k course with a school-record time of 30:30. His mark surpasses the previous record of 31:21 set by Anthony Kelhower on the same course during the 2007 NCAA regional meet.
With his finish, Omar paced the Retriever squad for the fourth time this season and helped UMBC gained its first-ever top-ten finish at an NCAA event. Previously, the Retrievers, who were ranked in each USTFCCCA poll this season, had finished as high as 12th.
A week prior, Omar led UMBC it its first America East Conference championship since 2005, placing third overall and earning a spot on the All-Conference squad.
For the season, Omar led the Retriever squad four times, and scored for the Black and Gold at each of the other two meets. In addition to his 10k record at the NCAA meet, the sophomore set a new school 8k record of 24:21 at the Princeton Invitational on Oct. 19.
