Two Straight: Women’s 4x200 Relay Breaks School Record Again

PHILADELPHIA – For the second straight day, the UMBC women’s 4x200 relay team broke the school-record while taking seventh in the ECAC finals, Saturday afternoon at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
After the Retrievers edged the mark down to 1:37.92 on Friday, the four-some of junior Kirsten Jones (Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K Magnet) and sophomores Paulette Fogle (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara), Kalane’ Abbey (Laurel, Md./Laurel), and Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) clipped the record-time to 1:37.88 on the meet’s final day.
Two other relays competed for UMBC on Saturday as the men and women each entered a squad in the 4x800 race. The women’s team of sophomores Sarah Daly (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and Mary Katherine Kulp (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), freshman Angelina Oputa (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton), and junior Cody Mezebish (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) took 22nd place with a time of 9:16.41. For the men, juniors Andrew Smith (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) and Jake Albino (Hampton, Md./Minisink Valley), and freshmen Nick Johnson (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Andrew Keresztes (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) combined for a time of 7:49.37 to finish in 26th place.
In the throws, freshman Vincent Rentzsch (Oranienburg, Germany) and sophomore Thor Serafenas (Olney, Md./Good Counsel/Clemson) both earned top-ten finishes in the javelin and hammer competitions, respectively. Rentzsch recorded a throw of 62.88m (206’3”) to take third, while Serafenas’ heave of 53.48m (175’5”) in the hammer earned him ninth-place.
UMBC now returns home to prepare for the 2013 America East Outdoor Championships. The two-day conference meet will be held in Vestal, N.Y. at Binghamton University and will begin on Saturday, May 4.
