Long Moves Up in School Record Books in 60m Dash as Retrievers Compete at IC4A Championships

BOSTON – UMBC senior sprinter Dennison Long (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt/FIU) ran a career-best time in the 60m dash to take sole possession of fourth-place in the school record books as the Retriever track and field teams competed at the ECAC and IC4A Championships, Sunday at the Boston University Track and Field Pavilion.
Long advanced to the event finals in the 60m dash with a personal-best time of 6.86 to move into sole possession of fourth place in the UMBC record book. He then took ninth in the finals running a 6.91.
Hurdler Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) also advanced to the finals, finishing in fifth place with a time of 7.96. Earlier this season, Proctor became the first Retriever to break the eight-second barrier in the event and holds the school record with a time of 7.87.
For the women, America East Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete Mercedes Jackson (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) captured a bronze medal in the 60m dash with a final’s time of 7.48. Jackson will now wait to see if her season-best time of 7.34 is good enough to make it to the NCAA Championships to be held Mar. 8-9 at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. The sophomore standout currently ranks tied for 15th in the nation.
In the shot put, senior Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen), a four-time indoor shot champion in the America East, placed fourth at the ECAC meet. The team captain recorded a toss of 14.68m (48’2.00), just an inch shy of the third-place finisher. Junior Yao Adantor (Laurel, Md./Reservoir/Morgan St./Maryland) took 15th in the men’s competition with a heave of 15.79m (51’9.00”). Adantor broke the UMBC school record earlier this season by registering a heave of 16.50m (54’1.75”) at the America East Championships.
Back on the track, freshman Andrew Keresztes (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Port Jefferson) and junior Kirsten Jones (Brentwood, Tenn./M.L.K. Magnet) competed in the finals for the 1,000m run and 200m dash, respectively. Keresztes finished eighth (2:34.46) in the 1K while Jones placed ninth (25.10) in the sprint.
A day after setting a new school record, the women’s 4x400 relay team of Paulette Fogle (Washington, D.C./Bishop McNamara), sophomore Kalane’ Abbey (Laurel, Md./Laurel), D’Nique Phillip (Elkton, Md.) and Jones finished eighth in the finals.
