Track and Field Heads Back to the Big Apple for the New Balance Collegiate Invitational
BALTIMORE, MD. – The UMBC men’s and women’s track & field teams head to New York City on Friday to compete at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. A year ago, the men finished fifth at the competition, while the women placed tenth.
With outstanding performances so far this season, junior Cameron McDearmon (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin)will be looking to surpass the competition in the weight throw, as well as the shot put. Recently being named the America East Field Athlete Performer of the Week after recording the second-longest throw of the year in the conference, McDearmon will be looking to put up another top performance.
Teammate Aaron Brooks, the school record holder in the shot put, will accompany McDearmon in field events. He aims to better his existing shot put record of 15.71m (51’ 6.5”) for the Retrievers.
On the track, junior Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone), last year’s 60m hurdle champion will be looking to earn high accolades yet again. Proctor has been named America East Track Athlete of the Week once this year already, after claiming gold in the event at the Penn State Relays in January. His time of 8.03 qualified him for the IC4A meet to be held in March.
On the women’s side, stand out Mercedes Jackson (Huntington, Md./Huntington) continues to impress in both the 60m dash and 200m run. In her first collegiate meet, Jackson broke the UMBC record in the 60m dash, and then broke it again at the Penn State Relays (7.50)
Defending her school record, junior Chowan Brightful will compete in the high jump for UMBC. Brightful won the high jump event at the season-opening Bison Opener back in December with a jump of 1.7m (5’ 7”). She was then named the America East Field Performer of the Week, as a result.
Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) will continue to lead in the shot put. Last week at the Penn State Nationals, Deller threw a career-best 47’ 8” to place fifth at the meet.
The New Balance Invitational is a two day event that begins Friday morning.
