BALTIMORE—Senior track and field standout Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) has been named to the 2009-10 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America University Division Men’s Cross Country/Track and Field Third Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America Tuesday. It is the first time in UMBC’s Division I history that three Retrievers have been honored as Academic All-Americans in the same year, as women’s tennis senior Alice Chen (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) and men’s swimming and diving junior Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Center) were honored earlier in June.

Devaud becomes the 19th Academic All-American at the Division I level for UMBC and the third from the men’s cross country/track and field program. He joins Adam Grossman (2006) and Rob Magin (1992) to give the program the second-most awards along with baseball and women’s cross country/track and field. Women’s tennis has the most with six.

Devaud won the heptathlon at the IC4A Championships in March after successfully defending his title in the heptathlon at the 2010 America East Indoor Track and Field Championships. He was honored with the Matt Skalsky Scholar-Athlete Award at UMBC’s varsity awards ceremony in May. The 2009 America East Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete graduated in late May in mechanical engineering with a 3.62 cumulative GPA.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
