Track and Field Standout Keith Onto Voted UMBC Athlete of the Month for February
BALTIMORE—Senior Keith Onto of the men's track and field team was named UMBC Athlete of the Month for February 2011 in a poll of fans conducted from March 1-7. Onto received 848 of 1,312 total votes (64.6 percent) to outdistance himself from runner-up Abbey McKenney of women's swimming and diving (353 votes, 26.9 percent). Erin Brown of women's basketball, Amanda Deller of women's track and field, Justin Fry of men's basketball and Brad Reitz of men's swimming and diving were also nominated.
Onto won the heptathlon at the 2011 America East Indoor Track and Field Championships with a score of 5,096 points. The school record holder in the toughest event in indoor track won the 1,000-meter run and 60-meter hurdles portions of the heptathlon while finishing second in the high jump and shot put and fourth in the long jump and pole vault. The native of Point Pleasant, N.J., also competed in the 60-meter hurdles individual event, where he finished seventh in a time of 8.44 seconds.
