Track and Field Finishes Outdoor Opener at Colonial Relays Saturday
WILLIAMSBURG, Va.—Senior Sara Parkinson (Chorley, England/Loughborough University) broke the school record in the women's 5,000-meter run as the UMBC track and field teams opened the 2011 outdoor season at the Colonial Relays this weekend. The men finished 14th with 29 points, while the women took 20th with 16 points.
Parkinson finished 12th in the 5,000 in a time of 17:04.22, breaking Karin Wagner's 26-year old record.
Sophomore Amanda Deller (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) won the shot put with a throw of 14.22m (46'8").
Junior Imani Colbert (Upper Marlboro, Md./C.H. Flowers) finished fifth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 14.56. Fellow junior Kiki Malomo-Paris(Northern Ireland/Glenlola Collegiate School) placed seventh in the long jump with a leap of 5.36m (17'7").
On the men's side, junior Aaron Brooks (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dematha) earned bronze in the discus throw with a heave of 47.16m (154'9") and placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 14.25m (46'9").
The trio of sophomore Trae Proctor (Brandywine, Md./Thomas Stone) and seniors Dominic Devaud (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and Keith Brown (Columbia, Md./McDonough) finished 4-5-6 in the 110-meter hurdles in times of 14.78, 14.99 and 15.18, respectively.
Sophomore Shioma Obemeata (New Rochelle, N.Y./Iona Preparatory/St. Francis College) finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 13.95m (45'9.25")
Freshman Vinny Di Salvo (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) crossed the line eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in time of 9:28.15.
The sprint medley relay team of Brown, freshman Kyle Baker (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and juniors Arjun Pradeep (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) and Joshua Hewitson (New Market, Md./Linganore) finished third in a time of 3:31.80.
The Retrievers return to action next Saturday for the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md.
