Justin Carter Advances to Qualifying Round of ITA All-American Championships; Falls in Tough Three-Setter To USF
Tulsa, Okla.- UMBC sophomore Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Academy) won four matches and made it through the pre-qualifying portion of the 2013 ITA Men's All-American Championships before falling in a tough three-set match on Sept. 30.
Carter advanced further in the national competition further than any player in school history.
Four of Carterís five matches went the distance and he staved off a match point in his third round victory over Jonas Dierckx of Iowa. An America East First Team selection in singles and doubles as a freshman, Carter opened with a come-from behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Ryan Cheung of UC-Irvine. He then triumphed in straight sets over Andres Alfonzo of TCU, 6-3, 7-5.
Carter dropped the first set to Dierckx, 1-6, and came back from a match-point down in a second-set tie-breaker to triumph, 7-6 (7), 7-5. He was able to advance in the qualifying portion of the championships with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Illinois Stateís Jacob Wilson.
Playing his fourth match in a two-day span, Carter captured a first-set breaker before succumbing to Nils Skajaa of San Francisco, 6-7 (4) 6-4, 6-4.Carter and classmate Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) will compete in the qualifying doubles competition against a duo from UAB on the morning of Oct. 1.
