Flushing, N.Y.- For the third consecutive year, the UMBC men’s tennis team reached  “Championship Sunday” at the America East Tournament, but the Retrievers were bested by Binghamton, 4-1, at the United States National Tennis Center.

Binghamton has won five consecutive league titles.

UMBC evened the doubles competition when the No. 3 tandem of senior Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz.) and freshman Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) triumphed, 8-5. The No. 1 match-up decided the doubles point, and the senior combo of Cristian Hodel (Calarasi, Romania) and Patrick Amorim fell agonizing short, losing a 9-8 (7-4) decision.

The Bearcats extended their advantage to 3-0 with victories at No. 1 and 6 singles. But UMBC junior Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) got the Retrievers on the board with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 position.

At 7-5, 4-1, Adewumi was within two games of cutting the deficit to 3-2 at the No. 2 singles position, but Binghamton closed out the match with a straight set victory at the No. 3 slot.

Adewumi was a perfect 3-0 in the two matches, nearly reaching a 4-0 mark.

The Retrievers finished the 2012 campaign with a mark of 10-10.
