The UMBC men’s tennis team won for the third time in four outings when they defeated Morgan State, 6-1, on April 7.

The Retrievers evened their spring record at 8-8 on the campaign.

The Retrievers took the first two doubles matches that went to conclusion and captured the doubles point. Senior Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz.) teamed with freshman Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) to win an 8-1 decision at the No. 3 slot, and a pair of first-year players, Juan Manuel Aranzazu (Ibague, Colombia) and Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) captured an 8-3 victory to secure the point.

After UMBC dropped a match at the No. 1 singles position, Aranzazu, Adewumi and Patel quickly triumphed to wrap up the match for the hosts. Aranzazu overwhelmed Jannick Tash, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, and Adewumi defeated Eric Ward, 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 position. Patel dropped just one game at the No. 6 hole, routing James Lee, 6-0, 6-1.

Gray, in the No. 5 position and junior No. 4 Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) added on singles victories to finalize the scoring. Gray took down Aaron Benjamin, 6-4, 6-3, while Berret outfought Djordje Ljubinkovic, 3-6, 6-2 (10-4).

UMBC will next see action at America East rival Binghamton on April 14.
