Men's Tennis Completes Weekend Sweep With 6-0 Blanking of St. Joseph's
1/29/2012
The UMBC men’s tennis team completed a weekend sweep of a pair of matches and improved to 2-1 on the season as the Retrievers blanked St. Joseph’s, 6-0, at Twin Lakes Racquet Club.
The two teams competed in singles matches only in the early season match.
UMBC senior Cristian Hodel (Calarasi, Romania) opened the match with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over senior Jeff Kessler at No. 2 singles. Retriever junior Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) dropped the first set to Tommy Gates, but rallied to defeat the junior, 4-6, 6-3 (10-6). Senior Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz.) put the Retrievers ahead, 3-0, as he bested Alex Veronis, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles slot.
Freshman Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) clinched the victory for UMBC when he dropped a team-best five games in a 6-3, 6-2 win over junior Erik Thunberg at the No. 5 slot.
St. Joseph’s fell to 0-3 in three dual matches this season.
"The guys impressed me today with how well they competed throughout the match,” said head coach Rob Hubbard. “ The veterans set a strong example at the top of the line-up and the three freshmen closed door for us against St. Joseph's. All around it was a good day for the Retrievers."
UMBC has a couple of weeks off before resuming match competition at America East rival Hartford on Feb. 11.
