New Haven, Conn. – The UMBC men’s tennis team suffered a tough 4-1 loss to Binghamton in the title match of the 2011 America East Championships.  

Binghamton, which captured its fourth consecutive league title, won the doubles point, outlasting the Nos. 3 and 2 Retriever duos.

The Bearcats took straight-set decisions at Nos. 1 and 6 singles, but UMBC sophomore Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) put the Retrievers on the board with a 6-4, 6-1 win over R. Haggai at No. 5 singles.

The other three singles matches were tightly-contested, but the Retrievers could not complete a comeback. UMBC junior Rasid Winklaar (Willemstad, Curacao) was on serve at 3-6, 6-4, 1-2 at No. 2 singles, but junior Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz.) was edged, 6-3, 7-5 by BU’s Wong to give Binghamton the match-clincher.

The Retrievers finished another outstanding campaign with a record of 14-6 and competed for the championship for the fourth time in five seasons.
