Senior Mwali Phiri Sparks Men's Tennis 5-2 Victory Over Georgetown

Baltimore – In his final home match, senior Mwali Phiri (Yonkers, N.Y.) squeezed out victories in singles and doubles and helped UMBC to a 5-2 win over Georgetown.
UMBC won its third straight match and improved to 13-5 on the season, while Georgetown dropped its fourth straight and fell to 6-12.
Phiri combined with junior Rasid Winklaar (Willemstad,Curacao) to edge Bryan Miller and Charlie Caris, 9-7 at No. 2 doubles. UMBC’s No. 1 and 3 doubles duos each won 8-5 decisions at the Retrievers took the doubles point.
Foure of the six singles matches were tightly-contested affairs, and Phiri won a key singles match at the No. 6 slot, edging Brian Ward, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
Winklaar outlasted Andy Bruhn, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles slot and Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Ariz.) defeated Casey Distaso, 6-4, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.
No. 1 Cristian Hodel (Calarasi, Romania) led, 4-3, when his opponent, Mike Clarke retired.
Phiri improved to 13-4 on the spring and has won seven of his last eight matches at the No. 6 singles position. The newly-formed duo of Phiri and Winklaar are 3-0 at No. 2 doubles.
