Adewumi, Phiri Shine Again for Men's Tennis at Navy Gold Invitational

Joe Adewumi won all three singles matches at Navy.

Annapolis, Md.—The UMBC men’s tennis team competed in the Navy Gold Tennis Invitational this weekend, along with squads from Georgetown, George Washington and the host Midshipmen.

 

Senior Mwali Phiri (Yonkers, N.Y./Tuckahoe/Tyler CC) and junior Joe Adewumi (Phoenix, Arix./North Canyon) continued their torrid fall campaigns.  Phiri won the No. 4 singles flight, by winning two of three matches, while Adewumi captured the No. 3 singles flight, sweeping all three of his singles matches.

 

Adewumi won two of three matches in third-set  tie-breakers, including an opening 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (13-11) thriller over Navy’s Zach Nicholson.  The duo of Phiri/Adewumi won No. 1 flight doubles matches over Navy, 8-5, and Georgetown, 9-7, but fell to the Colonial tandem of Kushma/van Gils, 8-3.

 

Sophomore Adam Duprat (Bobign, France) also had an outstanding event , winning two of three singles matches at the No. 1 flight and combined with countryman sophomore Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) to win two of three matches at No. 2 doubles.  

 

There was no team scoring in the event.
