Baltimore—The UMBC men’s tennis team improved to 10-3 on the season with a 7-0 win over Howard in the first match played at the UMBC Tennis Complex in 2010.

UMBC is now ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic region. The 10-3 start ties the best in UMBC’s Division I history, as the 1991 squad got off to a 10-3 start en route to a 14-3 season record.

"The guys came out and took care of business today,” head coach Rob Hubbard said.  “They stayed focused starting with the doubles and continuing throughout the singles.”

The Retrievers easily captured the doubles point, winning both matches contested by 8-1 counts. Senior Chris Meyer (New Market, Md./Urbana) dropped his first set to Devard Wharton, at No. 1 singles, but bounced back convincingly in a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory.

UMBC triumphed in all of the other four singles matches, punctuated by sophomore Joe Adewumi’s (Phoenix, Ariz./North Canyon) 6-1, 6-1 victory over Brandon Burns at No. 5 singles.

Howard defaulted at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.

The team heads to Texas for spring break with a match vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi set for March 16.
