Men's Tennis Set to Face Nationally-Ranked Yale in Friday Match at Navy
2/18/2010
The UMBC men’s tennis team (5-1) will put its four-match winning streak on the line and face a supreme test on Friday, Feb. 19, as they face No. 69 Yale (2-3) in an 8:00 p.m. match-up at the U.S. Naval Academy. The UMBC men extended their winning streak to four straight with a 7-0 victory over Morgan State on Saturday, February 13. The Retrievers dropped only three games as they swept the Bears in doubles. Senior Fredi Voorman (Talinn, Estonia/Audentes Private) and sophomore partner Allen Tsang (Wellesley, Mass./American Heritage (Fla.)) blanked Morgan State at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, before Voorman went on to win at No. 2 singles in straight sets. The Retrievers didn’t drop a set as senior Chris Meyer (New Market, Md./Urbana) clinched the UMBC singles sweep with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win at No. 1 singles. "This should be an interesting test for our men's program,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. “After playing nationally ranked William & Mary very close earlier in the season the next step for us would be to knock off a nationally-rated program. Yale is a tough squad though, so it will take us firing on all cylinders to bring home a victory. " The Bulldogs will look to bounce back from two losses at the ECAC Indoor Championships this weekend. Last weekend, the Bulldogs lost close 4-3 matches against both Princeton and Brown at the ECAC Indoor Championships at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center. “We had a good week of practice, and I am confident that we'll get back on track this weekend after our disappointing losses at the ECAC Championships,” said Alex Dorato, the Cary Leeds Head Coach of Men’s Tennis. “Both Navy and UMBC have strong line-ups, but I think we match up favorably.”
