Men's Tennis Wins Fourth Straight; Retrievers Blank Morgan State, 7-0
2/14/2010
The UMBC men’s tennis team (5-1) extended its winning streak to four straight with a 7-0 victory defeating local rival Morgan State, 7-0, in a match played at Baltimore Fitness & Tennis Center in Pikesville, Maryland.
The Retrievers captured the doubles point, breezing in all three matches. In singles play, No. 1 senior Chris Meyer (New Market, Md.) won a first-set tie-breaker in his 7-6 (2), 6-2 victory over Kevon Charles. No. 5 senior Mwali Phiri (Yonkers, N.Y.), who combined with Meyer to triumph at No. 2 doubles, blanked his foe, Dwayne Thomas at No. 5 single, 6-0, 6-0.
All six of UMBC’s singles matches were decided in straight sets.
UMBC returns to action on Friday, Feb. 19, when they take on nationally-ranked Yale at the U.S. Naval Academy.
