UMBC

The UMBC men’s tennis team (3-1) enjoyed the weekend, sweeping matches vs. host Duquesne, 4-3, and Youngstown State, 6-1.

On Saturday, UMBC dropped the doubles point to the Dukes, but won a trio of three-set matches to spark four of six singles wins. No. 1 Chris Meyer (New Market, Md./Urbana) defeated Jeremy McClelland in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Newcomers Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) and Mwali Phiri (Yonkers, N.Y.) pulled out three-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 respectively, setting the stage for sophomore Joe Adewumi’s (Phoenix, Ariz.) deciding match. Adewumi triumphed, 7-5, in the third set  over DU’s Gustavo Villares to capture the match for the visitors.

"From the opening point in doubles this was an all-out battle at every position,” head coach Rob Hubbard said. “Our men were able to come from behind because of their resolve to never give up.

That resolve showed as Phiri and Berret were able to come from behind in their third sets to win and set the stage for Joseph Adewumi to close out his third set with the fourth and final point for the Retrievers."

Against the Penguins on Sunday, UMBC captured the doubles point and dropped just one set in singles. Senior No. 2 Fredi Voorman (Talinn, Estonia) defeated Felipe Rosa, 6-3, 7-6 (3) and No. 3 Adam Duprat (Bobigny, France) and No. 5 Adewumi dropped a combined four games in their victories.

"Today's match vs. YSU was a testament to the men's mental toughness as they were able to take the court 12 hours after their hard-fought, come-from-behind victory over Duquesne,” Hubbard said “While we may not have played our best tennis, the team was determined to finish the weekend with a victory. It speaks a great deal about our team pride."
