Men's Tennis Sweeps Dramatic Doubles Matches, But Falls 5-2 to 47th-ranked Maryland

The UMBC men’s tennis team swept 47th-ranked Maryland in doubles action, but the Terrapins won a hard-fought 5-2 decision in College Park, Md. UMBC drops to 4-3, while Maryland improves to 9-2 on the season.

All three doubles matches were decided in mini-breakers as each one was knotted at eight-all. At No. 1 sophomore Nick Savage-Pollock and freshman Fredi Voorman defeated David Kwon and Boris Fetbroyt, 5-0 in the breaker and the No. 3 Retriever duo of junior Fernando Ferreira and freshman Chris Meyer won by the same margin of Nickolai Nielsen and L. Lavallee. The No. 2 doubles tandem of juniors David Jackson and Irfan Shamadsin won their tie-breaker, 4-0.

Ferreria was the lone Retriever to triumph in singles, as he defeated Aaron Carr, 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Two additional matches went to three sets, as Savage-Pollock narrowly fell to Lavallee, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and in the deciding match at No. 2 singles,  Meyer lost in a third-set tie breaker to Nicolas Frayssinoux, 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3-0).

UMBC is back in action vs. Quinnipiac on Wednesday.
