Has achieved UMBC's highest individual ranking in men's tennis ever, as he has climbed to #4 in the Northeast Region in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings... just completed a brilliant fall campaign, winning the "A" flight singles championship at the Cornell Invitational,reaching the semi-finals of the Omni Hotels ITA Northeast Regional Championships, and then capturing the 2003 Penn Tennis Classic...he compiled a singles record of 16-1 this fall, and improved his three-year UMBC record to 66-13, all at #1 singles.
Won his last 10 matches of the 2003 spring season and posted a 25-8 record at #1 singles...named All NEC at #1 singles and #1 doubles (14-10 in ‘02-’03)...won four of five three-set matches last season...had a brilliant fall 2002 campaign, where he reached the semi-finals in both the East Coast Invitational at Old Dominion and the ITA Regional Championships at Pennsylvania…earned four NEC Player of the Week honors for his sterling play…in his sophomore season, he continued UMBC's tradition at #1 singles, with a brilliant 22-4 campaign and All NEC honors at #1 singles and #1 doubles (10-3)…in the fall, he won the "A" flight singles at the Cornell Invitational and reached the finals in the DC Metropolitan Championships…ended the season ranked in the region with wins over #11 Adam Marchetti of West Virginia and #17 Reed Hagmann of Colgate…a transfer from Norfolk State… became first Retriever to capture a title in the Cornell Fall Invitational…defeated the numbers 1, 2, and 3 seeds to win the A Flight Singles title…was the outstanding freshman at Norfolk State.
Reached the quarter-finals of the Czech junior national singles tournament…is strong from both sides of the court and is a player who will fight until the final point…brother, Jakub, is a member of the Czech National Volleyball team, which finished fourth in the European Championships…majoring in Visual Arts/Film at UMBC…lists favorite musical artist as the late Jim Morrison…son of Zdenka and Josef Novotny…full name is Josef Novotny…born July 6, 1981.
