The UMBC men's tennis team swept a pair of matches in Connecticut this weekend by identical 6-1 scores. The Retrievers defeated conference rival Hartford on Friday and outlasted Fairfield in New Haven on Saturday.
Against the Stags, seniors Melker Svard and Eliott Loubatie, at the No. 1 slot, and Justin Carter and Alex Drean, at the No. 2 position, both won their doubles matches by 6-2 counts to give UMBC the doubles point.
The stubborn Stags fought hard in singles, but UMBC toughed out four of the six singles matches. Only Drean cruised, defeating Anthony Caputo, 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 4 position. Carter captured a tight 7-6, 7-5 decision at the No. 1 position, while Svard split his first two sets in tie-breakers, before winning a 7-6, 6-7,6-3 decision over Ofir Solomon.
The men host Richmond on Sunday, Feb. 28.
