Cambridge, Mass. – The UMBC men's tennis team will be the No. 2 seed for the America East Conference Men's Tennis Championships, which begin on Friday, April 25 at the Wilde Lake Community Center in Columbia, Md.

The Retrievers (12-9) serve as the host institution and will take on the No. 3-seeded Stony Brook Seawolves (12-6) in the first semifinal match on Friday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m. The title match will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 27.

SEASON IN REVIEW: The Retrievers enter the tournament with a record of 12-9. The squad, which features sophomores at the top four singles slots, opened the campaign at 2-3, but reeled off seven consecutive victories from mid-February to early March. UMBC dropped three tough matches on a trip to Nevada and California, but snapped a four-match slide with a dramatic 4-3 win over a tough Xavier squad on April 5.

THE PLAYERS: Sophomore Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) enters the AE tournament with the most singles victories (14) and total wins (19) for the Retrievers this spring. The team captain compiled a 14-5 mark at No. 2 singles and was a two-time (March 11, April 15) America East Player of the Week.

Sophomore Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Academy) posted a 12-5 singles mark, all at the No. 1 position. Carter was the America East co-Player of the Week on March 25. Classmate Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) also hit double figures in singles wins with 10. He earned AE Player of the Week honors on March 4.

The Retriever tandem of junior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and sophomore Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) are a team-best 8-4 in doubles competition in 2014.

AMERICA EAST CHAMPIONSHIP: UMBC has reached the title match in each of the last four years, but have been denied an opportunity to advance to the NCAA Championships by Binghamton each time. The top-seeded Bearcats won their sixth consecutive America East Conference Championship, defeating UMBC, 4-0, at the UMBC Tennis Complex last April. The Retrievers won the America East title in 2007.
