BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) won a thrilling three-set match at No. 1 singles, but No. 54 George Washington (10-5) defeated the Retrievers, 6-1, in chilly, breezy conditions at the UMBC Tennis Complex.
Carter dropped the first-set, 6-3, to GW's No. 1, senior Nikita Fomin. Carter got out to a 5-2 second set lead, but Fomin battled back to send the match to a second-set tie-breaker. With the outcome of the match decided, Carter forced a third-set 10-point breaker, with a 7-5 decision. Trailing 8-7, Carter took two points on Fomin's serve, then held on match point for the hard-earned victory.
The Colonials opened the proceedings by capturing the doubles point. Viktor Svensson and Ulrirk Thomsen defeated the UMBC tandem of Eliott Loubatie (Paris, France) and Kamal Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley), 8-2, at the No. 3 position and the GW No. 1 tandem of Francisco Dias/Julis Tverijonas secured the point with an 8-6 squeaker over Carter and sophomore partner Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden), 8-6.
Four of the six singles matches were tightly-contested. GW won in comfortable fashion at the Nos. 3 and 6 positions to take a 3-0 lead. At the No. 4 position, UMBC sophomore Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) served to send his first set into a tie-breaker, but was broken and fell, 7-5, to Tverijonas. The Nos. 2 and 5 matches both went to tie-breakers, but Svard and junior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) lost to Dias and Svensson respectively.
All three Retrievers fell in straight sets, as Tverijonas' 7-5, 6-3 victory over Drean clinched the match for the visitors.
The Retrievers, now 9-7 on the year, had just returned on Friday from their spring break trip to Nevada and California. They will continue the four-match homestand with a Friday, March 28 encounter versus St. Joseph's.
