Tulsa, Ok.- UMBC sophomores Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) both advanced to the second round of pre-qualifying for the 2013 ITA Men's All-American Championships.
Carter rallied to defeat Ryan Cheung of UC-Irvine, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, while Svard ousted South Florida's Ignacio Gonzalez-Muniz in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Both opponents were No. 1 players from their respective schools.
Sophomore Alexandre Drean (Bayonne, France) dropped his match, falling 6-3, 6-1 to T.J. Pura of seventh-ranked Duke.
"It was a strong showing for UMBC on the first day of competition as we are up against the best in the nation here in Tulsa," said head coach Rob Hubbard. " I look forward to what today will bring UMBC tennis."
Carter will take on Andres Alfonzo of TCU, while Svard must face No. 23 John Darmstaedter of Fresno State.
