Blacksburg,Va.- Sophomore Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) advanced to the third round in both singles and doubles competition to highlight UMBC's efforts at the 2013 USTA/ITA Regional Championships hosted by Virginia Tech University.
Svard opened singles competition with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Liberty's Jorge Azuero. He then defeated Viktor Svensson of George Washington, 6-3, 6-2 before running into the tournament's top seed, Mac Styslinger of Virginia. The Cavaliers' top player defeated Svard, 6-3, 6-0 and has advanced to the tournament's semifinals.
In doubles competition, Svard partnered with classmate Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) to capture a pair of matches. The duo edged the team of Lange/Hill from George Mason, 8-5 and then proceeded to oust the tandem of Heugas/Voscek, VCU, 8-4. With a quarterfinal berth on the line, the Retrievers were defeated in a tie-breaker, falling, 8-7 (1) to the tandem of Dias/Svensson of GW.
Junior Daniel Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School)and sophomore Alex Drean (Bayonne, France) also combined to win in doubles, eliminating the Norfolk State team of Zyhmantovich/Riethmueller, 8-4. But the UMBC side was knocked out by the top-seeded tandem of Aragone/Styslinger, 8-4.
Drean also won his first singles match and Gray captured a consolation singles match in the regional championships.
