Columbia, Md. – The UMBC men’s tennis team lost a difficult match to the Stony Brook Seawolves, falling, 4-3, in the America East Conference Tournament semifinals.

Men's Tennis Tabbed No. 2 Seed as UMBC Prepares to Host America East Championships
Cambridge, Mass. – The UMBC men’s tennis team will be the No. 2 seed for the America East Conference Men’s Tennis Championships, which begin on Friday, April 25 at the Wilde Lake Community Center in Columbia, Md. The Retrievers (12-9) serve as the host institution and will take on the No. 3-seeded Stony Brook Seawolves (12-6) in the first semifinal match on Friday, April 25 at 2:00 p.m.

Melker Svard Earns Second AE Men's Tennis Player of the Week Honor
Cambridge, Mass. – UMBC sophomore Melker Svard, (Gothenburg, Sweden/De la Gardie Gymnasiet) has been named America East Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced today. Svard went 3-0 at No. 2 singles last week.

Lone Senior McCawley, Lansinger Triumph and Highlight Men's Tennis' Triumph in Finale
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC men’s tennis team blanked the Coppin State Eagles, defeating them 7-0 on Senior Day at the Retriever Tennis Complex. Many players got on the courts for their first time in several matches, including senior Hunter McCawley (Bel Air, Md.). who handled his opponent, 6-1, 6-2.

Vestal, N.Y.- Sophomores Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) and Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) continued their torrid singles play, but perennial America East power defeated the Retrievers, 5-2, at the Bearcats’ Sports Complex.

Williamsburg, Va. – The UMBC men’s tennis team captured three of six singles matches, but the host William & Mary Tribe edged the Retrievers, 4-3, in a match that began Sunday morning in Williamsburg.

Akinshemoyin Wins Clincher as Men's Tennis Edges Xavier, 4-3
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC men’s tennis team defeat Xavier, 4-3, at the UMBC Tennis Complex, snapping a four game losing streak and improving to 10-7 on the campaign. The hero of the day was freshman Biyik Akinshemoyin (Laurel, Md. / Resevoir), who played the last match of the day and triumphed, 7-5, in the third set.

Men's Tennis Gets Back to Work Versus Outstanding Xavier Squad on Saturday
BALTIMORE – The UMBC women’s tennis team will host Temple and Xavier this weekend, while both teams will face the Musketeers on Saturday. The women’s match against Temple will begin Friday at 1:00 p.m. while the matches against Xavier will start at 11:00 a.m. Both contests will be played at the Retriever Tennis Complex.

Cambridge, Mass. – Sophomore Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Academy) became the third UMBC men’s tennis player to earn America East Conference Player of the Week honors in the 2014 season. Carter shared the men’s award with Stony Brook’s Jose Morales.

BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) won a thrilling three-set match at No. 1 singles, but No. 54 George Washington (10-5) defeated the Retrievers, 6-1, in chilly, breezy conditions at the UMBC Tennis Complex.

Sacramento, Calif. – In a tightly-contested match, the host Sacramento State Hornets edged UMBC, 4-2, in the final match of the Retrievers’ western spring break trip. Sacramento State has earned five consecutive Big Sky titles and subsequent NCAA Championship appearances.

Reno, Nev. – The UMBC men’s tennis team saw its seven-match winning streak come to an end, as Seattle (6-11) rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Retrievers at Reno High School. The Retrievers (9-4) had not lost since a setback at Penn State on February 8.

Cambridge, Mass. – For the second consecutive week, a UMBC sophomore has earned America East Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week honors. Melker Svard (Gothenburg, Sweden) won all three of his matches over the weekend, leading the Retrievers to victories over George Mason and Drexel and earned the league’s honor.

Philadelphia – The UMBC men’s tennis team extended its winning streak to seven straight with a 5-1 victory at Drexel at the Legacy Tennis Center on Sunday evening. The two teams only competed in singles matches during the contest. The Retrievers improved to 9-3, while the Dragons slipped to 6-5 on the campaign.

University Park, Pa. – The UMBC men’s tennis team traveled to Penn State to take on the 58th-ranked Nittany Lions and the young Retrievers dropped a 7-0 decision at the Indoor Tennis Center.

Norfolk, Va. – The UMBC men’s tennis and host Old Dominion split six singles matches, but the Monarchs captured the doubles point and squeezed out a 4-3 victory over the Retrievers at Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

BALTIMORE – The UMBC men’s tennis team returned from its trip to Texas and blanked a tough Temple side, 7-0, at 40 West Racquet Club on Friday evening, Jan. 31. With the victory, UMBC improved to 2-1 on the young season.

Corpus Christi, Texas – The UMBC men’s tennis team dropped a 5-0 decision to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Thomas J. Henry Center to complete their trip in Texas. The Retrievers split two matches in the Lone Star state, while the host Islanders improved to 6-3 on the season.
