BALTIMORE- The UMBC men's tennis team will be the No. 2 seed in this weekend's America East Conference Championships, which are being held at the UMBC Tennis Complex. The Retrievers will open play on Friday, April 26 when they take on No. 3 seed Stony Brook. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
No. 1 and defending champion Binghamton will take on No. 4 Hartford in the second semi-final match at approximately 3:30 p.m.
UMBC is led by freshman No. 1 Justin Carter (Randallstown, Md.) who is off to a great start in his career, posting a 15-9 mark in singles play. Carter, a three-time America East Player of the Week, pairs with senior Gaulthier Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) as a formidable combo at the No. 1 doubles slot. Berret also reached the 50 win plateau in singles play this season, and stands at 55-34 for his career. UMBC finished the regular season 8-8, winning three of its last five.
Stony Brook enters the championship having won four matches in a row. Mons Knudtzon figures to be one of the Seawolves' most important players at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles. Marcelo Locatelli has also played to a 4-3 mark at No. 4 singles this year.
UMBC defeated Stony Brook, 5-2, when the two squads met on Long Island on March 29.
The championship match is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Sunday.
